Laboratory of World Political Analysis
The LABMUNDO is an interdisciplinary research launched in March 2006 by UFBA's School of Business and Public Administration (EAUFBA). It counts on the participation of researchers from different departments of the Federal University of Bahia and other research centers in Bahia (UCSAL), Brazil (UFRGS, IRI-PUC) and abroad (Canada, Costa Rica, Spain, Mexico and France). Its researchers - Masters, PhDs, as well as undergraduate and graduated students - work on 3 interdependent scientific aces, all of them aiming at understanding and analyzing the contemporary world order and its major social, economic, political and cultural transformations since the 1970's.
The implementation of a rigorous scientific agenda in partnership with national and international research networks, the understanding of contemporary world complexities and their dynamic effects on Brazilian as well as Bahia´s society, and the opening of a new innovative higher education platform in the field of International Relations within UFBA are the three essential trademarks of LABMUNDO.
Key Objectives
The main objectives of LABMUNDO are rooted in scientific production and academic professorship on the following issues:
a) The consolidation of economic globalization and its different dimensions (commercial, financial, technological, political, cultural, social) that engender contemporary tensions between integration and fragmentation, interdependence and autonomy, inclusion and exclusion;
b) The dominance of global and transnational interests over the national loci of power, its decision-making procedures and definition of development strategies;
c) The expansion of private and business interests that tend to be detrimental to public goods and the regulation of collective interests, for example, in issues related to intellectual property regimes and global environmental governance structures and mechanisms;
d) The changing conceptions of the territory and its governance, considering the various spillovers of the economic globalization on development strategies, especially in peripheral and semi-peripheral countries of the world-order;
e) The transformation of the nation-state and the re-definition of politics evolving from a dynamic of exclusive and homogeneous actors towards a pluralistic perspective of international actors in the global arena;
f) The end of the Cold War and USSR's collapse, with its significant impacts on the formation of a new global hegemony, in terms of political strategies, but also of ideas and world visions.

LABMUNDO's researchers are currently working on 3 scientific aces:
1) International Relations: theory, history and international politics;
2) Globalization and new actors in the contemporary world order;
3) International organizations and global governance.
