The publisher Lemos Mídia is launching the book Brazilian Authors to Think About the World, edited by Larissa Rosevics (IRID-UFRJ). Throughout 20 chapters, each dedicated to researchers who have helped transform the study of International Relations over recent decades, the anthology celebrates the memory, intellectual output and contribution of those who have helped to consolidate an original and independent school of thought originating in Brazil. In particular, the coordinator emeritus of LABMUNDO is profiled in the essay The Essence and Innovation of Carlos R. S. Milani for International Relations in Brazil, written by Prof. Danielle Costa da Silva. Our coordinator, Prof. Rubens de S. Duarte, also contributes to the volume with the chapter Maria Regina Soares de Lima: founder, role model and mentor.

These few lines have undertaken the complex task of providing readers with a clear and accessible introduction to Carlos R. S. Milani’s contribution to the field of International Relations in Brazil. Milani’s contribution to the various areas of study within International Relations is well-known, characterised by his critical, multidisciplinary and methodologically mixed perspective, linking theoretical reflections with empirical data – such as analyses of public policy, quantitative data and maps – and broadening scientific knowledge through works informed by a Brazilian perspective on the world and on ourselves. And always guided by the scholarly spirit of contributing to the advancement of science for the benefit of society – after all, as he himself has emphasised, international relations and foreign policy are factors that impact the lives of all citizens, in Brazil and around the world, and it is vital to understand them for the benefit of all.

The book provides an overview of the transformative period currently being experienced by International Relations studies in Brazil, characterised by profound changes in the methodological, theoretical and epistemological fields. By reflecting on the country’s role in an increasingly interconnected world, the book highlights the maturing of Brazilian thought in this field, driven by intellectuals who have contributed to the development of distinct and critical perspectives. In contrast to traditional canons, historically dominated by white, Anglo-Saxon male authors, the book proposes a more diverse and inclusive approach, bringing together Brazilian strategists from different backgrounds, career paths and theoretical perspectives.
