The World Political Analysis Laboratory (LABMUNDO) is pleased to announce the release of its latest collective publication, published in portuguese by Appris Editora. Organised by our coordinators, professors Rubens de S. Duarte and Carlos R.S. Milani, the book Foreign Policy, Authoritarian Leadership and Ultraconservatism proposes a theoretical analysis of the emergence and spread of conservatism in the 21st century and its expression through the rise of authoritarianism in international politics, through studies carried out by 21 researchers from the Laboratory.
In recent years, the world has witnessed the actions of various ultra-conservative and authoritarian leaders, governments and movements that challenge democratic institutions. The use of social media and tools for disinformation and the dissemination of fake news, including artificial intelligence applications, has been a common aspect in different national scenarios. From the national to the transnational, learnings and practices circulate, always with the aim of undermining principles, norms and experiences of democracy and of multilateral organisations. Through research that has resulted from a wide-ranging collective reflection conducted within LABMUNDO, the collection seeks to address this phenomenon from a theoretical and conceptual point of view. The different studies presented here consider the Brazilian context of the emergence of Bolsonaro and seek to analyse how ultraconservative and anti-democratic leaders and movements have produced negative influences on Brazilian foreign policy agendas.
In nine chapters, the collection brings together papers signed by labmundans Arthur Vargas Facini, Beatriz Triani Cherem, Bénet Justina Machava, Bruna Soares de Aguiar, Caio Samuel Milagres, Danielle Costa da Silva, Francisco Carlos da Conceição, Henrique Rabello de Carvalho, Hugo Bras Martins da Costa, Janaína Pinto, Júlia Nascimento Santos, Juliana Ramos Luiz, Juliana Pinto, Kethlyn Winter, Leandro Dias Conde, Magno Klein, Maria Isabel Santos Lima, Murilo Gomes da Costa, Pablo Saturnino Braga, Pedro Guiliche and Tiago Nery. The book launch event will take place on 7 October 2024, at 5.30pm, at the Institute of Social and Political Studies (IESP-UERJ), in Rio de Janeiro.
