Last Monday, 15 June, LABMUNDO and the Jean Monnet Chair at UERJ welcomed Prof. Kevin Parthenay (Université de Tours) to give a lecture at our headquarters at the Institute of Social and Political Studies (IESP-UERJ). As part of the project Autonomy and Multilateral Reconfigurations: EU–Latin America Relations (AURELA) the researcher from the Political Observatory of Latin America and the Caribbean (OPALC/Sciences Po) delivered a lecture entitled Latin America and the contemporary global order to staff from both groups and other interested parties.

With a PhD in Comparative Politics from the Paris Institute of Political Studies (Sciences Po), Kevin Parthenay is a Full Professor of Political Science at the University of Tours (France). His main publications include A Political Sociology of Regionalisms (Palgrave Macmillan, 2019), Crises in Latin America. Democracies Uprooted (Ediciones Universidad de Salamanca, 2020) and Latin American Politics (co-authored with Frédéric Louault; Bruylant, 2023). His research focuses on comparative regionalism, Latin America’s place in global multilateralism, the foreign policy of Latin American states and democracy in Central America.

Coordinated by Prof. Parthenay together with Rafael Mesquita (UFPE), the Project AURELA brings together scholars from French (Université de Tours, Sciences Po Paris, Sciences Po Saint-Germain-en-Laye and Université Clermont Auvergne) and Brazilian institutions (UFPE and UERJ) – including representatives from LABMUNDO, the Jean Monnet Chair and the Interdisciplinary Observatory on Climate Change (OIMC) – to study the tension between autonomy and cooperation in relations between Latin America and the European Union. Approved under the CAPES/COFECUB Program call for proposals for the period 2026–2029, the initiative envisages the production of 37 outputs, including research, training and dissemination activities.
