LABMUNDO at COP30 in Brazil

Between 10 and 21 November 2025, Brazil hosted the 30th Conference of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30) in the city of Belém (PA). Amidst an intense schedule of official and parallel events, LABMUNDO participated in some activities, offering its contribution to the debate on the ongoing multilateral negotiations and the global climate emergency outlook.

On 11 November, Tuesday, Belém’s Casa da Cidade began a series of Roundtable Discussions organised by the Interdisciplinary Observatory on Climate Change (OIMC) and the City Laboratory with an event celebrating the launch of the Atlas of Climate Justice in Latin America and the Caribbean (Clacso, 2025). Produced by the OIMC and the Observatory of Geopolitics and Ecosocial Transitions (GeoEcos) of the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) and edited by LABMUNDO coordinators Professors Rubens de S. Duarte and Carlos R. S. Milani, along with Enara Echart Muñoz (UCM), Lara Sartorio (IMAR-Unifesp), Breno Bringel (IESP-UERJ e UCM) and Caio Samuel Milagres (ECEME), the publication features thematic cartography developed by our Cartography Studio. Prof. Duarte was responsible for presenting the volume to those present.

The roundtable discussions program continued until 20 November, with contributions from various members of the LABMUNDO team, such as Beatriz Triani, Carlos Milani, Janaína Pinto and Mariana Castro, discussing key issues on the climate agenda in general—and Conference negotiations in particular—with representatives from social movements, indigenous and quilombola communities, research centres, climate scientists, journalists, communicators, youth collectives, and community leaders.

The following day, 12 November, Rubens Duarte represented the Laboratory on a panel promoted by the International Youth Nuclear Congress (IYNC) and the Latin American Observatory of Energy Geopolitics, held in the COP30 Blue Zone, the official venue for climate negotiations and delegations invited to the Conference. With the theme Energy Transition and Climate Justice, the panel also featured contributions from environmental lawyer Victor del Vecchio. On Saturday, 15 November, Prof. Duarte participated in the launch of the collection The Palgrave Handbook on the International Relations of the Amazon (Palgrave MacMillan, 2025), organised by Christoffer Guldberg (Kings College), Thomas Froehlich (Kings College), Thais Tartalha do Nascimento Lombardi (UFABC) and Ana Flávia Granja e Barros (IREL-UnB), at Cas’Amazônia. The volume includes a chapter signed by our coordinator, co-authored with Louis Monroe.

Meanwhile, in Rio de Janeiro, on 13 November, Prof. Pablo de R Saturnino Braga was invited to lead a Dialogue on Climate Justice, as part of the UN Brazil Information Hub on Climate Action programme. On that occasion, our coordinator had the opportunity to discuss with the communicators present the inequalities of climate impacts around the world and the role of countries in the Geopolitical South in formulating solutions to the crisis. Promoted at the Itamaraty Palace through a partnership between the United Nations Information Centre for Brazil (UNIC) and the Association of Foreign Press Correspondents (ACIE), the project sought to offer a support structure and collaborative workspace for journalists, content producers, networks, and community communication collectives covering the Belém Conference.
